Taman Connaught Playground [2011-06-17]

Taman Connaught (Chinese: 康乐花园) at 6½ Mile Cheras used to be a residential backwater until the completion of the East-West Link connecting Cheras Road to the Federal Highway in 1995. Since then the township has boomed with the likes of University College Sedaya International (UCSI), Giant Superstore, and a drive-through McDonald's to name a few. Every Wednesday evening the longest pasar malam in Cheras opens along Jalan Cerdas from 6 PM to 11 PM.

One fine day I happened to pass by the playground next to Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Taman Connaught (Chinese: 康乐华小), one of the very few Chinese schools built in Malaysia during recent (the past 30) years as it's government policy not to encourage the building of new non-Bahasa schools. But that's another topic for another day's discussion.

I felt the playground presented a challenge. Everyone's seen playgrounds. How to make something eye-catching out of the ordinary? So I tried to do something within 15 minutes. Focus on close-up shots. Shoot from a less common angle. Look around for little things that might catch a stranger's interest.

Here are some of my shots for your viewing pleasure. I'd consider this exercise as composition practice with a point-and-shoot, specifically the Canon IXUS 980IS. Not exactly a new camera, but nonetheless a useful picture capture mechanism.
